Hurricane Roof Repair- Ernie B

Ernest B. was one of my favorite customers ever. He lived only about a mile from my house. I first looked at his roof in May of 2016. At that time the roof was pretty damaged by the 2013 hailstorm that had hit that area, but Ernie’s insurance would not cover it. We did a minimal repair and replaced some missing shingles and decided the long-term strategy was to try to wait it out.

When Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, it was time to grasp the opportunity. The storm blew off several shingles on Ernie’s roof, but his insurance company still refused to pay. By now the roof was in pretty rough shape and he decided just to replace the roof out of his pocket. We installed a GAF Timberline HDZ roof in Weathered Wood. At that time, the Dove Crossing subdivision’s HOA required all roofs to be that color, so we complied with that. We did install a high-profile ridge cap which really set his roof apart from his neighbors.

When Ami arrived in late November to inspect the roof, Ernie wasn’t himself. When walking around the house in the backyard, he finally broke down and started to cry. Ernie’s wife had passed away. Ami and Ernie hugged, both with completely broken hearts.

That year, Ami was really into making Christmas door wreaths, and she decided to make him one. She took it over there. Ernie confided in her he didn’t have the heart to do any Christmas decorating but hung the wreath on the door. Shortly after that, Ernie sold his home and moved to Utah to be near his son. Ami sends him a Christmas card and he sends her a picture of his wreath, proudly displayed on his door in Utah.
